Weston secures the silverware
The Tinwald Cycling Club contested one of its blue ribbon events on Saturday, the Tinwald Tavern Mid-Canterbury Cycling Championships.
A good field of riders were vying for fastest time, and line honours on the 64km, Wakanui Beach block raced under handicap conditions.
Gary Weston saved his best performance for the last race of the season to take a well earned victory and lift the championship title.
Isabella Inglis in her first season as a senior produced a standout ride to take the second place spoils and in doing so also raised the under 19 fastest time trophy.
Hot on her tail in third place was Timaru visitor Oliva Milne, who’s efforts also saw her take the senior women’s fastest time ribbon.
The top six places were rounded out by Paul Brake, Nick Grijns, and Don Sutton.
Scratch marker Steve Hands secured overall fastest time honours riding the distance in 86.27, holding out the ever present Kyle Gray on the finish line.
Kristine Marriott produced her trade mark tough ride to secure the women’s fastest time Cup.
Monique Brake rounded out a top season with the women’s vet 1 fastest time ribbon, with Christchurch visitor Mary Jones claiming the women’s vet 4 title.
Cole Harris swapped his mountain bike for a road bike to take the senior men’s time ribbon.
Hamish McDonald laid down a storming ride to secure the men’s vet 2 fastest time honours.
The men’s vet 3 fastest time honours went to Darryl Kircher, who will be happy with his days work, as will men’s vet 4 winner Brent Cowie.
The juniors also raced for Club ribbons and titles over a 16km course.
Kaidyn Broomhall signed off on his first season of bike racing in the best possible fashion, lifting the junior title.
Cooper Spillane had a great ride to take second place.
His big sister Zoe Spillane took third place and in doing so also lifted the under 17 fastest time ribbon, riding the course in 26.10.
Fourth place Jack Gorrie goes from strength to strength recorded the under 15 boys fastest time.
Eliza McKenzie stormed into fifth place and was rewarded with the fastest under 15 girls title.
Kenny Johnston secured division 2 honours from Janette Hooper, and Allan Johns.
Broomhall powers to victory
Alan Broomhall build on his recent Coast to Coast exploits to muscle his way to victory in the Tinwald Cycling Club, Ross Templeton Motors, Kelly’s Bar and Café, 65km handicap event over the energy sapping 7 rises course on Sunday.
Broomhall and his co-markers found the front mid race and set a solid tempo throughout ensuring in was going to take a big effort from the chasing bunches to haul them in.
Broomhall won the two up sprint to take the win with second place getter Don Sutton laying down his best race of the season leading into next week’s finale.
Jelle Hendrikson will be happy with his days work claiming the third place spoils.
Simon White produced a storming ride to lead the chasing group in to secure fourth place.
Mike Hanson and Monique Brake rounded out the top six.
Scratch marker Kyle Gray recorded a time of 93.02 to lift fastest time honours.
Steve Hands and Larry Neal claimed second and third time respectively.
The juniors and division 2 raced over 18km.
Zac Brookland flew the family flag taking a well earned win in a tight finish to lift the Skilling Memorial Cup.
Jack Gorrie backed up his recent good form with second place.
Third place getter Kaidyn Broomhall made it a good day for the Broomhall stable securing the final podium spot.
Zoe Spillane covered the distance in 30.44 to claim fastest time honours and fourth place.
Flynn Turnbull charged into fifth place.
A good field of Division 2 riders went to the line with Nigel Leary staying away to take the win from Kenny Johnson, and Merv Grewar.
Next week the Club will contest the final race of the season, the Mid Canterbury Championships raced over 64km around the Wakanui block.
Cyclist’s battle the elements
The Tinwald Cycling Club travelled to the roads of Flemington on Sunday to contest the Calder Stewart, 60km handicap event on the Blackbridge block.
Not only did the cyclist battle each other but they had to content with the hot nor’west conditions that have largely been missing for the season.
The rising winds played into the hands of the back markers, who seized the opportunity and rode their way through the field, finding the front inside the final 10km.
Steve Hands showed he is coming into some great form, hitting the line strongly to secure a hard fought victory.
Hands efforts also saw him claim fastest time honours, riding the distance in 82.02.
Tony Ward showed his toughness to take the second place spoils.
Third placegetter Kyle Gray put in a good days work that also saw him take second time honours.
Mike Pearce produced a top shelf ride to see him into fourth place.
Cole Harris was hot on his heals in fifth place, with sixth placegetter Glen Gould recording third fastest time.
The juniors and division 2 contested a 20km handicap event.
Jack Gorrie has had the best possible start to his road racing career, recording back to back wins.
Jack produced a storming ride to get to the front and hold out the fast finishing back markers.
Scratch marker Zoe Spillane charged into second place and in doing so recorded a time of 32.51 to lift fastest time.
Zac Brookland stepped on to the final podium position for the second week running after another great ride.
Ryan Gallagher, Charlotte Neal, and Kaidyn Broomhall rounded out the top six.
Merv Grewar produced a great ride to keep the chasing bunch at bay to secure the division 2 spoils.
Brian Ellis led the bunch in to record second place from Allan Johns.
Next week the Club will contest the penultimate race of the season, a 64km handicap event around the Wakanui 7 rises course.
