Leary lifts Peach Cup

Nigel Leary timed his run to perfection when winning Tinwald Cycling Club’s, Peach Cup, Canterbury Hotel, 45km handicap event around the Methven block on Sunday.

Leary and his co-markers worked hard to find the front inside the final 10km but their job was not over. A solid group of riders had formed behind them and were steadily chopping into their lead.

Leary and two of his co-markers, Michelle Davidson and Lucy Kirwan made a bid for glory in the final 2km, getting to the line with 3 seconds to spare over the chasing bunch.

Davidson and Kirwan were rewarded for their efforts securing second and third places respectively.

Aaron Fitzsimmons led the chasing group in to claim fourth place with Paul Macfie and Ross Templeton rounding out the top six.

Scratch marker Tony Ward took fastest time honours, riding the course in 64.42, with Michael Templeton and Nathan Tew securing second and third time.

The juniors and division 2 contested a 15km handicap event.

Front markers Jacob Fitzsimmons and Emma Begg rode strongly keeping the chasing riders at bay. Jacob had the fastest finish to claim victory with Emma storming into second place.  Alyssa McGinity had a great ride to take the final podium position.  Sam Cuttle was fourth, with Josh Harkness and Lily Davidson rounding out the top half dozen.

Back marker Mitchell Fitzsimmons secured fastest time honours covering the distance in 23.49, with Oliver Davidson and Ethan Titheridge taking second and third time.

Jacquie Fitzsimmons rounded a good day for the family winning division 2 from Al Gilchrist and Beth Begg.

Next week the Club will contest a 48km handicap event around the Wakanui Beach block.
