SPIRITED RACING ORDER OF THE DAY

The Tinwald Cycling Club raced a graded scratch event around the Blackbridge block on Sunday.

There were good sized fields in all 4 grades with C grade consisting of 24 riders alone.  A and B grade competed over 60km while C and D grade rode 40km.

Timaru riders Craig Domigan and Andy Van Der Heyden forced the pace early in the A grade eventually breaking away with Steve Hands and Brad Hudson.

Domingan proved too strong in the sprint to the line to secure victory from Van Der Heyden who overcame a bee string and flat tyre.  Hands and Hudson recorded third and fourth places respectively.

B grade saw a large bunch sprint.  Ross Templeton showed he is riding back into some form finding the line strongly to secure the win by the barest of margins from a determined Denise Taylor.  Kristine Marriott putting herself in the thick of the finish secured third place with Kev Hurley in fourth.

C grade was also only decided on the line.  Ross Avis made a bold charge to the finish holding on to claim the major spoils.  Gary Weston displayed his sprinting prowess of old to secure second place.  Roger Stephens and Ross Proctor claimed third and fourth respectively.

Pam Harcourt pulled out all the stops to win D grade but only after a hard fought sprint to the line with her co-markers.  Lucy Kirwan grabbed second spot from Keryn O'Donnell and Brian Ellis.

Division 2 and under 17's raced a handicap event over 20km.

Helen Bancroft held on gamely to secure the victory in Division 2 from Janette Hooper and Rachael Russell.

Fresh from victory in the under 15 grade of the Junior Tour of Southland, Timaru rider Jack Ford had too many guns in the under 17 event.  Riding off the scratch mark, Jack rode though the field to claim the win and fastest time honours.  Sam Cullimore gave no quarter in his effort, deservedly grabbing second place.   Josh Donaldson took out third from Alex Wootton in fourth.

The under 15's saw Ben Sutton equally as dominant riding solo through the field to step on top of the podium.  He was made to work in the charge to the line however by Abe O'Donnell and Josh Kershaw who gamely stuck to Ben's wheel over the concluding stages of the race.  Abe and Josh were rewarded for their efforts with second and third places.  James Skinner rode strongly into fourth place.

Next week the Club travels to Chertsey for a handicap event.
