COLEY CARRIES TOO MANY GUNS
Doug Coley continues to make his first full season of cycling a memorable one taking victory in Tinwald Cycling Clubs, The Courier, LL Kirwan and Sons Ltd, 45km handicap event around the Dawson's Road block on Sunday.
Starting off the middle mark, Coley and his co-markers steadily made their way though the field with the bunch swelling to some 20 riders, setting up a frantic charge to the line.
Coley rallied the Brendon Davidson lead out train, getting a surprising early jump on the field. He was able to come off Davidson's wheel with the line in sight and hold on from the fast finishing bunch led by second place getter Shane Gerken with Kev Hurley riding on päua power lifting the third place spoils.
Shona McGrath and Kim Marshall deservedly claimed fourth and fifth places respectively.
Scratch rider, Alex Frame, fresh from having recently won three medals at the World Junior Track Championships, secured fastest time honours riding the distance in 64.50 from co-marker Jason Christie, who also registered a top shelf result at the recent World Road Cycling Championships. Hamish Wright took third time.
The juniors raced over 15km.
Hannah Kirwan dug deep in the sprint to the finish to claim the winners spoils in the under 15 grade from co-marker Jessie Banks. Both girls had ridden well as a team to keep the fast finishing Ben Sutton at bay. Ben was rewarded for his efforts collecting third and recording the fastest time of 29.45.
The under 17's result was decided on the line as well with Julia Tarbotton showing real strength to stay off the challenge of co-marker Livvie Kennedy.
As with the under 15's both these riders worked well as a team to ensure the best possible result. Laurent Fifield worked hard to bridge the gap and justly took third place. Back marker Brendon Whalley secured fastest time honours riding the course in 25.55.
Shannon Rafferty took line and fastest time honours in Division 2 from Rachael Russell and Janette Hooper.
Next week the Club will race a graded scratch around the Blackbridge block.
