AVIS LIFTS PEACH CUP

Ross Avis made the long weekend a memorable one, lifting the Peach Cup in Tinwald Cycling Clubs, 45km handicap event at Methven on Sunday.

The Peach family have had a long association with the Club ensuring that the race would be a spirited one.

Avis and his co-markers combined with several other marks bringing a competitive group of 15 riders together for the final charge to the line.

Victory was secured by the barest of margins from second place getter Brendon Davidson.  Neil Wylie continued his good form to take third place spoils.  Christchurch to Hanmer Springs winner, Myles O'Donnell claimed fourth place with Russell Ward in fifth.

Jaron Stephens rode the course in 67.38 to secure fastest time honours from co-markers Daniel Rafferty and Steve Hands. 

Division 2 and juniors raced over 20km.

Alan Dowdle proved to be the strongest in Division 2 claiming the win and fastest time from Graham Russell and Josh Dowdle.

Laurent Fifield was rewarded for some solid efforts of late with victory and fastest time honours.  He was pushed right to the line by co-marker Josh Donaldson who secured second place.  Frances Smith produced a top effort grabbing the third podium position. Laurent covered the distance in 36.07. 

Ben Sutton continued his dominance of the under 15 grade securing the win and fastest time award.  However he only picked up the front with the finish line in sight.  Abe O'Donnell led in this brave group containing Jesse Banks and Alex Holmes who took third and fourth spots respectively.  Ben's time was 39.30.

Next week the Club races a handicap event at Wakanui.

LYSAGHT SPRINTS TO VICTORY

Greg Lysaght fresh from conquering Christchurch's LeRace sprinted to victory in Tinwald Cycling Club's, 40km handicap event raced at Chertsey on Sunday.

With a field in excess of 50 riders, Lysaght and his co-markers worked hard to keep the chasing bunches at bay. Their commitment paid off with less than 20 seconds separating them on the finish line from the chasing group.

Bruce Albon claimed second place spoils, missing out on the top prize by the barest of margins. Adena Middleton rode strongly to secure third place. Caroline Askin and Alex Crawford were right in the thick of the finish to take fourth and fifth places respectively.

Scratch rider Lauren Ellis covered the course in 55.56 to secure fastest time honours from co-markers Steve Hands and Brad Hudson.

Division 2 saw Barry Linwood take victory from Tania Tocher and Janette Hooper.

The juniors raced over 13.5km. Brendon Whalley continued his good form picking up fastest time honours and the winners ribbon in the under 17 event. Sam Cullimore and Laurent Fifield gave plenty of cheek in the charge to the line to deservedly take second and third places respectively. Brendon rode the event in 22.10.

Ben Sutton rode strongly off the scratch mark in the under 15 event to find the front in the home straight and go on to victory and in doing so take fastest time honours in 24.47. Second place was lifted by Bradley Whalley with Jesse Banks taking the third place spoils.

Next week the Club travels to Methven to compete in a 45km handicap event.

SPIRITED RACING ORDER OF THE DAY

The Tinwald Cycling Club raced a graded scratch event around the Blackbridge block on Sunday.

There were good sized fields in all 4 grades with C grade consisting of 24 riders alone.  A and B grade competed over 60km while C and D grade rode 40km.

Timaru riders Craig Domigan and Andy Van Der Heyden forced the pace early in the A grade eventually breaking away with Steve Hands and Brad Hudson.

Domingan proved too strong in the sprint to the line to secure victory from Van Der Heyden who overcame a bee string and flat tyre.  Hands and Hudson recorded third and fourth places respectively.

B grade saw a large bunch sprint.  Ross Templeton showed he is riding back into some form finding the line strongly to secure the win by the barest of margins from a determined Denise Taylor.  Kristine Marriott putting herself in the thick of the finish secured third place with Kev Hurley in fourth.

C grade was also only decided on the line.  Ross Avis made a bold charge to the finish holding on to claim the major spoils.  Gary Weston displayed his sprinting prowess of old to secure second place.  Roger Stephens and Ross Proctor claimed third and fourth respectively.

Pam Harcourt pulled out all the stops to win D grade but only after a hard fought sprint to the line with her co-markers.  Lucy Kirwan grabbed second spot from Keryn O'Donnell and Brian Ellis.

Division 2 and under 17's raced a handicap event over 20km.

Helen Bancroft held on gamely to secure the victory in Division 2 from Janette Hooper and Rachael Russell.

Fresh from victory in the under 15 grade of the Junior Tour of Southland, Timaru rider Jack Ford had too many guns in the under 17 event.  Riding off the scratch mark, Jack rode though the field to claim the win and fastest time honours.  Sam Cullimore gave no quarter in his effort, deservedly grabbing second place.   Josh Donaldson took out third from Alex Wootton in fourth.

The under 15's saw Ben Sutton equally as dominant riding solo through the field to step on top of the podium.  He was made to work in the charge to the line however by Abe O'Donnell and Josh Kershaw who gamely stuck to Ben's wheel over the concluding stages of the race.  Abe and Josh were rewarded for their efforts with second and third places.  James Skinner rode strongly into fourth place.

Next week the Club travels to Chertsey for a handicap event.

COLEY CARRIES TOO MANY GUNS

Doug Coley continues to make his first full season of cycling a memorable one taking victory in Tinwald Cycling Clubs, The Courier, LL Kirwan and Sons Ltd, 45km handicap event around the Dawson's Road block on Sunday.

Starting off the middle mark, Coley and his co-markers steadily made their way though the field with the bunch swelling to some 20 riders, setting up a frantic charge to the line. 

Coley rallied the Brendon Davidson lead out train, getting a surprising early jump on the field.  He was able to come off Davidson's wheel with the line in sight and hold on from the fast finishing bunch led by second place getter Shane Gerken with Kev Hurley riding on päua power lifting the third place spoils.

Shona McGrath and Kim Marshall deservedly claimed fourth and fifth places respectively.

Scratch rider, Alex Frame, fresh from having recently won three medals at the World Junior Track Championships, secured fastest time honours riding the distance in 64.50 from co-marker Jason Christie, who also registered a top shelf result at the recent World Road Cycling Championships.  Hamish Wright took third time.

The juniors raced over 15km.

Hannah Kirwan dug deep in the sprint to the finish to claim the winners spoils in the under 15 grade from co-marker Jessie Banks.  Both girls had ridden well as a team to keep the fast finishing Ben Sutton at bay.  Ben was rewarded for his efforts collecting third and recording the fastest time of 29.45.

The under 17's result was decided on the line as well with Julia Tarbotton showing real strength to stay off the challenge of co-marker Livvie Kennedy.

As with the under 15's both these riders worked well as a team to ensure the best possible result.  Laurent Fifield worked hard to bridge the gap and justly took third place.  Back marker Brendon Whalley secured fastest time honours riding the course in 25.55.

Shannon Rafferty took line and fastest time honours in Division 2 from Rachael Russell and Janette Hooper.     

Next week the Club will race a graded scratch around the Blackbridge block.

FRONT MARKERS KEEP BIG FIELD AT BAY

For the second week in a row the front markers worked well together to keep a large field of some 70 riders at bay in Tinwald Cycling Club's, AshburtonOnline, Kelly's Cafe and Bar, 36km handicap event around the roads of Winchmore on Sunday.

The final result was determined on the line with the barest of margins between all of the place getters.

Angela Smith, in her first full season of road racing, secured victory and with it the Bushell Memorial Trophy.  Glen Moore claimed second place spoils having reacquainted himself with the bike after many years chasing a rugby ball around.  Alex Crawford and the pride of Team Celtic Cycling Paul Summerfield filled third and fourth respectively.  Pam Harcourt continued her good start to the season grabbing fifth place.

Scratch rider Hamish Wright claimed fastest time honour from co-markers Craig Domigan and Tony Ward, riding the distance in 48.53.

The under 17's and division 2 riders competed over 16km in handicap format.  Laurent Fifield held too many guns getting to the front and finishing strongly to claim victory and second fastest time.  Co-marker Josh Donaldson was close behind securing second place and third time.  Alex Wootton pulled out a top sprint to snatch third place from Livvie Kennedy in fourth.  Julia Tarbotton was on their wheels to grab fifth spot.  Sam Cullimore continued his good form riding the course in 27.59 to claim fastest time honours.

Emma Hudson claimed top podium position in the division 2 ranks from Janette Hooper and Helen Bancroft. 

The under 15's rode 8km, Team Domigan secured the quinella with India riding a super race to grab victory from her little brother Chase.  Alex Holmes had the better of a tough sprint finish to grab third place by the smallest of margins over Abe O'Donnell and James Skinner.

Bailey Kershaw took fastest time from co-markers Kees Donaldson and Bailey O'Donnell, with a time of 15.42.

Next week the Club will race a 38km handicap event on Wilson Road, Wakanui.

BIG FIELDS ORDER OF THE DAY

Big fields in all grades were the order of the day in Tinwald Cycling Clubs, 32km handicap event around the Wakanui Beach block on Sunday.

With in excess of 60 cyclists going to the start line it was Christchurch rider Ray O'Connor who won a spirited bunch sprint to score victory.

O'Connor and his co-markers combined well with the groups they caught, keeping the momentum going right to the line and setting up a grand stand finish.

The ladies then led the way filling the next four positions.

Pam Harcourt showed real strength to claim second place spoils after a hard fought sprint with third place getter Heather Daly.

Adina Middleton secured fourth place from Kimberly Marshall who continues to improve every week.

Hamish Wright who is building towards the up and coming Tour of Southland claimed the fastest time of 47.46 from co-markers Tony Ward and Nathan Tew.

The juniors and division 2 raced over 16km.

Henry Smith stepped onto the top of the podium having claimed victory in the under 15 grade.

He would have been aware that his sister Isabella Smith who rode powerfully to grab second position was chasing him down. Kees Donaldson lifted third place having been pushed hard by his co-marker Bailey O'Donnell who finished fourth.  Both were rewarded with second and third fastest times respectively.

Ben Sutton who continues to set the mark in this grade claimed fastest time honours riding the course in 30.27.

The under 17's saw the front markers shut out the back markers with some good team riding.

It was Brayden Booth who held on by the barest of margins to lift the top prize.  Alex Wootton was awarded second place with Julia Tarbotton taking the third place spoils.

Back marker Brendon Whalley rode the course in 26.43 to secure fastest time honours from Sam Cullimore and Laurent Fifield.

Eight division 2 riders took to the road.  Tania Tocher had a bit extra at the end of the race to secure first place from Helen Bancroft with Alex Cameron riding into third place.  Emma Hudson showed no mercy grabbing fastest time from her father in law, Brent Hudson.

Next week the Club will race around the Winchmore Church block.

SHEPHERD SECURES VICTORY

Andrew Shepherd in his debut season found his way onto the top of the podium on Sunday having won Tinwald Cycling Club's, 35km handicap event raced on Frasers Road.  With close to 70 riders going to the line the race result was wide open.

Working well as a group, Shepherd and his co-markers rode their way to the front of the race and settled into their work well aware the back markers were cutting into their lead.

With the finish line in sight Shepherd and second place getter Martin Hydes made a bold break from the group and held on to claim the major spoils.

John Uden charged into third place with Shane Gerken and Bruce Blackburn claiming fourth and fifth respectively.

Scratch rider Hamish Wright secured fastest time honours from Timaru riders Craig Domingan and Tom Prestidge.  Wright rode the course in a time of 50.17.

The under 17's and under 15's also competed in a handicap event over 20km and 11km respectively.  Another great field of close to 20 riders contested these races.

Brendon Whalley continued his good form securing victory in the under 17 grade and fastest time honours but only after a hard fought sprint with second place getter Frances Smith and co-marker Sam Cullimore who grabbed third place.  Brendon rode the event in 33.48.

Caitlin Holmes rode strongly off the front of the under 15 event to hold onto first place with Kees Donaldson making a late charge to the line to secure second from Josh Kershaw and Abe O'Donnell.

Ben Sutton finished fifth and in doing so claimed the fastest time of 20.53.

Janette Hooper lifted the major spoils in division 2 from Rachael Russell and Tania Tocher.

Next week the Club will race a handicap event around the Wakanui Beach block.
